London Photo Show 2025 | Jovis Leigh Howieson

The London Photo Show is back! Six photographers of the Urban Photographers Club community will be exhibiting their latest work! As they sit down with Noemie Decaen to discuss their projects, it is our pleasure to (re)introduce them and their photographs to you!

Our next photographer is Jovis Leigh Howieson!

Jovis, originally from Singapore and now based in London, is a passionate photographer whose journey began in 2018. What started as a hobby soon transformed her life, leading to creative adventures and meaningful connections.

She plans her travels around photography projects, always seeking out extraordinary people and places to tell their stories. She is currently exploring more of Asia for street and documentary photography, drawing on her South-East Asian roots to bring regional stories to the forefront through her work.

ND: What inspired you to curate this particular collection of photographs for your exhibition?

JH: I wanted to use my recent trip back home to Singapore as a lens to capture both tourists and the local surroundings. I’m fascinated by the contrast and interaction between visitors and the everyday life of my home country. Through these photographs, I aimed to document those fleeting moments where cultures intersect, revealing the character of the city not just through its landmarks, but through the people who pass through and those who call it home.

ND: Could you share some insights into the creative process behind these photographs?

JH: I approach each shoot with an open mind, allowing the images to come to me rather than forcing a specific outcome.

I spend time observing my surroundings, anticipating potential moments, and looking for scenes that might unfold into something visually or emotionally interesting.

It’s about staying present, being patient, and ready to capture those spontaneous interactions or subtle actions that reveal something about the people and place. This process allows for authentic, unscripted stories to emerge naturally through the lens.

ND: What emotions or messages do you hope viewers will take away from experiencing your exhibition?

JH: I hope my photographs evoke some kind of emotion or feeling in the viewer; whether it makes them laugh, smile, or even cry.

More than anything, I want the images to resonate on a personal level, perhaps inspiring someone to reflect on a memory, a story, or even create something of their own, like writing a poem or capturing a moment that feels significant to them. If my work can spark that kind of connection or inspiration, then I feel it has truly served its purpose.

ND: Are there any specific stories or moments from your photography that you would like to highlight in this exhibition?

JH: One particular moment stands out when a group of lively tourists spontaneously gathered around a local landmark, their enthusiasm radiating pure joy. Capturing that slice of life made me appreciate the unpredictable beauty of human interaction and the unique stories unfolding in public spaces. These encounters remind me how every moment is filled with its own magic, and I’m honoured to document these fleeting, vibrant instances that showcase the extraordinary essence of everyday life.

ND: How do you see your photography evolving in the future, and how might that influence your future exhibitions?

JH: I hope to become a better observer on the streets, sharpening my eye for detail and timing to elevate the way I capture powerful, storytelling moments.

In addition, I want to continue in portraits, events, and documentary photography. Each genre offering different ways to connect with people and tell meaningful stories.

As my photography evolves, I see future exhibitions becoming more focused and layered, reflecting deeper narratives and broader themes that speak to both personal and collective experiences. I’m excited to keep pushing boundaries while staying true to the heart of what I love: honest, human moments.

ND: What has been your experience with UPC in regards to this exhibition?

JH: It has been incredibly rewarding to work with a group of like-minded photographers through UPC for this exhibition. Being part of a community where everyone is genuinely passionate about growing, sharing, and supporting one another has made the process so enriching.

There's a beautiful sense of selflessness and encouragement—each person brings their own strengths and experiences, and we all learn from one another.

It's inspiring to see how everyone pushes themselves creatively while lifting others up. That collective energy and spirit of collaboration have been a huge part of what made this exhibition so special.
