Our next photographer is Victor Sanchez!

Victor, originally from Northern Spain, has always been fascinated by the world of photography. His journey began during his childhood, capturing moments during family events with his father's camera. Soon, he was given his very own cheap point-and-shoot camera, and he could not feel prouder of developing and showing the results to family members, even if most showed a not-so-great composition or had part of one of his fingers showing in the photograph.

When Victor turned 18, he saved enough to buy his first DSLR, which he used primarily for portrait and travel photography. Over time, his interests broadened to include landscape, wildlife, travel, and street. The latter has become a captivating type of photography for him, offering a raw and spontaneous glimpse into everyday life.

Victor moved to England for work, initially settling in the picturesque Southwest for over a decade. Three years ago, he relocated to London. The city's streets and diverse culture have further fuelled his passion for street photography.

ND: What inspired you to curate this particular collection of photographs for your exhibition?

VS: I was inspired to curate this collection because Feria de Abril in Seville is such a rich, vibrant event: full of colour, tradition, and moments that often go unnoticed.

As a Spanish photographer living abroad, I wanted to showcase a side of Spain that’s not always seen… something beyond the usual tourist images. Feria isn’t just about flamenco dresses and horses; it’s also about people coming together, sharing time, and celebrating in their own way. That mix of tradition and real life fits naturally with my street and documentary style. I took all the photos on the same day, just walking around and capturing those spontaneous, genuine moments that make the Feria so special.

ND: Could you share some insights into the creative process behind these photographs?

VS: These photos were taken as part of a workshop led by Polly Rusyn, which gave me the perfect excuse to spend the day fully immersed in the Feria with my camera.

The creative process was quite instinctive. I didn’t go in with a fixed plan, just curiosity, a sense of home, and a desire to observe. I wandered through the fair and Seville, looking for those spontaneous, everyday moments that often get overlooked.

The workshop encouraged us to slow down and be more intentional, which helped me notice the contrasts: the elegance of the outfits against the dusty roads, the mix of tradition and spontaneity, and the beautiful light bouncing off all the colours. I focused on capturing scenes as they happened (nothing posed or staged) just real people, real gestures, and a lot of personality.

ND: What emotions or messages do you hope viewers will take away from experiencing your exhibition?

VS: I hope viewers feel a sense of joy, warmth, and curiosity. The Feria is full of energy and colour, but it’s also deeply rooted in community, tradition, and family life. Through these photos, I want to share a slice of Spanish culture that people might not be familiar with.

I also want people to notice the explosion of colour: the dresses, the flowers, the carriages… and how people hold themselves with such confidence and pride. There’s a real sense of elegance in the way people present themselves, and I think that visual boldness says a lot without needing words.

ND: Are there any specific stories or moments from your photography that you would like to highlight in this exhibition?

VS: People often ask if my photos are portraits… but they’re not! I don’t stop people; I watch, I wait, and I catch moments as they unfold. One of my favourite shots is of a woman tying a knot in her mantón (shawl) with such elegance and focus, as if the whole Feria paused just for her. It’s a quiet moment, but full of grace and intention… very Spanish, very real.

ND: How do you see your photography evolving in the future, and how might that influence your future exhibitions?

VS: I see my photography becoming more documentary-driven, with a focus on specific themes or social topics that matter to me. I want to go beyond capturing day-to-day moments and start building more intentional series that explore culture, identity, or lesser-seen aspects of everyday life.

I think future exhibitions may reflect that shift, still rooted in real moments, but with a clearer narrative and purpose behind each project.

ND: What has been your experience with UPC in regards to this exhibition?

VS: It’s been brilliant. UPC has been really supportive. From encouraging me to apply, to sharing tips and cheering each other on. Being part of a community where everyone genuinely wants to see each other grow makes a big difference. It’s also pushed me to take my work more seriously and put it out there, which can be scary but exciting.
