Katie has enjoyed street photography for around 25 years after discovering some inspirational photographers in books, exhibitions and later, on social media. She realised that her snaps of strangers that she had been drawn to taking for years (much to the bafflement of her children), would actually fit neatly into this genre of photography. Thrilled to discover that her love of people-watching and photography could be combined into one interest, Katie particularly enjoys capturing photos of people in their everyday lives or as the primary subject within their surroundings. She likes to imagine what the story behind the person might be, and humanity - the distinct condition of being human, is important to her photography. If there are elements of humour or intrigue in the scenes she captures, that is a welcome bonus!
Her favourite street photographers include: Saul Leiter; Joel Meyerowitz; Josh K Jackson; Craig Whitehead (@sixstreetunder); Robert Frank to name a few of many! The list is always growing!
Katie is based in rural Devon in the UK and feels lucky to be able to frequently combine visiting her children in London and NYC, with some street photography expeditions.
Katie says: “the great thing about street photography is I get to combine two joys - taking photos, and a favourite past-time, people-watching! I love to sit in a café, or visit a busy city or market, camera in hand, observing people going about their daily lives, and, if an opportunity arises, freezing that scene into a record of that fleeting moment, a brief glimpse into their world.”
