Phil Turnbull is a street photographer who, since roughly 2021, has been wandering around aimlessly hoping the street photography gods will occasionally throw him a bone. Rather than focusing on perfect aesthetics or technical mastery, Phil mostly just looks for the slightly absurd, funny, or curious moments that everyone else had the good sense to walk past. He describes his process as "spontaneous discovery," which is really just a nice way of saying he has no specific theme in mind and makes it up as he goes along.
Despite this distinct lack of a plan, his work has somehow developed a recognisable character, mostly because his dry sense of humour naturally finds its way into the frame. He tends to avoid the overly dramatic or perfectly composed, preferring instead to capture the beautifully awkward reality of daily life. If you recognise one of his photographs, it’s probably because it looks like something only Phil would bother to stop and capture. While he is always quick to credit a lucky break, his ability to consistently spot the extraordinary in the mundane suggests there is far more than just luck at play
