Tobias Riedl was born in 1973 in Germany and has been taking photographs since the age of 15. Photography has accompanied him ever since, sometimes more, sometimes less intensively.
In 2013 he began photographing people on the streets – at first without any plan and without ever having heard the term “street photography”. It was simply the attempt to capture what was happening around him.
His first visit to London in 2018 became a turning point. There he met Brian Lloyd Duckett and the StreetSnappers community. The conversations, workshops and shared walks that followed sharpened his eye and gave his work a direction. Over the following years, numerous trips and encounters allowed him to engage ever more closely with street photography.
In October 2020 he took part in an exhibition for the first time: his images were shown in London at the Fujifilm House of Photography in Covent Garden, organised by the Urban Photographers Club. For him, this remains an honour and a milestone.
Tobias Riedl’s motivation is twofold: to document what happens on the street, and to look closely at people and the surroundings in which they move and live. He often describes himself as a hunter – waiting patiently for a particular moment and then capturing it with the camera. The result is a quiet, observant kind of photography that trusts the everyday to be worth looking at.
He lives and works in Amberg, Bavaria.
